Off Kilter
Welcome to Week 10 of the Summer Sampler Series quilt along! This week in piecing bootcamp, we are learning how to sew Partial Seams. And I happen to be the designer of this week’s block, Off Kilter! I designed Off Kilter as a nesting style block, giving you two chances to try your hand at partial seams.
A few tips before you get started:
I was able to cut my fabric almost entirely from my scrap pile. Be sure to check there first!
If you are not using solids, the direction that you cut your triangles absolutely matters. I mention it several times in the text and graphics in the cutting instructions. Please pay attention to these!
You may be wondering “why are we foundation paper piecing these half rectangle triangles? Can’t I just make a HRT and trim it to the right size?” Long story short - no. If you do that, the angles on your HRT will be incorrect and your points will be lost/not match up. The red line on the template below and the sample sewing is what will happen if you do that. So…just trust me and don’t. :)
For those of you new to Partial Seams, or in need of a refresher, I’ve created a video of that part of the block assembly. I hope it helps! (My daughter says I seem mad in the video. lol I promise I’m not mad! I was just trying not to be too loud as my husband was on a work call in the next room.)
It’s not too late to join in the fun with us this summer. (It’s actually never too late!) . When you sign up, you will immediately receive all the block patterns to date. For the late comers, I’d recommend starting with the current week’s block and then making the past blocks in your spare time. That way you can immediately join in the fun with everyone on Instagram and in the private Facebook group.
