Modern Machine Quilting with Catherine Redford
Last month, I came home from a holiday trip to Michigan to some very fun mail. Quilter, teacher, and friend Catherine Redford sent me a copy of her newest Quilting Arts Workshop DVD, Modern Machine Quilting. With the kids back in school, I finally had a chance yesterday to pop it into my laptop and check it out.
Catherine and I live about 15 minutes away from each other, and I've had the chance to see her work in person many times. She is a very experienced and talented quilter, so I knew her expertise would show in this video. At the beginning of this 1 hour and 15 minute class, Catherine gives some information and her tips on batting, thread, needles, pressing, batting tape, feet, and stitch plates. All very important components to getting the best results with your machine quilting.
She moves on and discusses the importance of sketching out your plan and showing how to practice your designs on paper.
I love how before demonstrating each type of quilting in this video, Catherine is shown sketching out the design first.
Catherine covers a huge range of free motion quilting motifs, from stippling to swirls and loops, from filler designs (flowers, puzzle pieces, pebbles, clam shells, flames, snail trails) to borders. She even shows how to make those popular feathers and ferns.
Throughout the video, you also see finished mini quilts that incorporate a lot of the designs. And Catherine also gives great tips - my favorite is to remember to breathe while quilting! How many of us have found ourselves completely tense and holding our breath when quilting? I know I have.
In celebration of her new Modern Machine Quilting dvd release, Catherine is running a giveaway over on her blog. Simply go to her website and leave a comment. At the end of the blog hop listed below, she will pick 2 DVD winners and 1 grand prize winner who will receive a Stella task lamp (winnerβs choice of color!) and a DVD as well.
++ Reminder: Comments posted here on my blog will not be included in the giveaway. ++
